Drip edge is a corrosion-resistant, non-staining material used along the eaves and rakes to allow water run-off to drip clear of underlying construction. It is the simplest form of metal flashing and provides an attractive, finished edge to roofing terminations. There are two basic styles of drip edge, generally known as C and "extended." C-style drip edge does not have an overhang, while the "extended" profile has a hemmed overhang at the edge of the roof deck. On rakes, drip edge is installed on top of the underlayment to prevent wind-driven rain from getting beneath it. On eaves, it is installed beneath the underlayment to allow water to shed smoothly off the roof if it gets under the shingles. Underlayments There are two major types of shingle underlayment: water-resistant and waterproof. Water-Resistant Underlayment
This is commonly referred to as roofing felt and is available in #15 (standard) and #30 (heavy duty) grades. The installation of standard underlayment beneath shingles is required by many shingle manufacturers. It is a product that consists of organic felt impregnated with asphalt saturant. Some also contain a fiber glass reinforcement which increases tear strength. The main purpose of roofing felt is to keep the roof decking dry until shingles can be applied and is thus known as "drying-in the roof." It is also useful as a barrier between the decking and asphalt shingles. It's ability to be water-resistant is temporary because once the shingles are installed, the holes created by the fasteners destroy its protection. Waterproof Underlayment
This is a self-adhesive underlayment that should be installed in all valleys, along eaves, and around skylights prior to shingle installation. It prevents leaks in extreme conditions such as high winds, heavy rains, and ice dams. See FAQ - What are ice dams and how do they affect roofing systems? It is excellent underlayment for low-slope shingle applications and required by some manufacturers for these situations. This product is waterproof because it seals around the nails that puncture it. Skylights
We can install a wide selection of skylights on your roof from brands like Velux. This includes cutting the opening in the roof, installing the window and all necessary flashing, and re-roofing the appropriate area around it. Skylights require precise flashing installation and special care should be taken to follow specifications; therefore only a professional roofing contractor should install them. |
